William 'Bill' Gibbons II

CAMDEN - William "Bill" Gibbons II, of Camden, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, in the Milford Hospice Center. He was 84. Mr. Gibbons was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Rehobeth, Md., to the late William Gibbons I and Carrie Dryden Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons served during World War II in the U.S. Army and received a Purple Heart. He retired in 1983 after 31 years civil service at DAFB as a foreman in Aerial Port. Mr. Gibbons had operated Pure Oil Station in Dover back in the early 50's. He also worked at the NASCAR Race Track as security at the Winston Media Center. Mr. Gibbons was a school bus driver for the Dover School District and shuttled cars for car dealerships in Dover. He was a member of the Whatcoat Methodist Church of Camden and the Walter L. Fox Post 2 in Dover and was a life member of the Camden/Wyoming Fire Co. Mr. Gibbons also was also Past Noble Grand of the International Order of ODD Fellows. He enjoyed fishing in Delaware Bay. Mr. Gibbons wintered in Hudson, Florida where he enjoyed fishing in the gulf. He also coached at the Dover Little League. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cecil and Ralph Gibbons; his sister, Margaret Worth; and grandson, Jason William Gibbons. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carrie Meeks Gibbons of Camden; two sons, Rodney W. Gibbons and his wife Lynn of Ocean Pines, Md., William Gibbons III and his wife Dawn of Dagsboro; his daughter, Brenda Will and her husband Bill of Wyoming; his sister, Anna Mae Cook of Cheswold; grandchildren, Christopher Gibbons and his wife Kristin, Jeffrey Gibbons and his wife Kimberly, Lindsey Beth Gibbons, Lisa Comfort and her husband Paul, Monica Slater and her husband Andrew, Michael W. Gibbons, Brian D. Gibbons, and Zachery A. Choma; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be noon Saturday in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where friends may call from 10 a.m.-noon. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901; or the Camden/Wyoming Fire Co., P.O. Box 186, Camden, DE 19934.
