William Dale Hammond, 67 FELTON - William Dale Hammond, of Felton, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. He was 67. Dale was born Oct. 27, 1941, in Dover, the son of the late William D. 'Bill' and Violetta Hammond. In 1959, Dale graduated from Felton High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, Carole Wright. Dale and Carole were married in 1961 and just celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on August 20th. Dale worked at the Wilmington Savings Fund Society for 38 years where he served as a mortgage loan officer. Later, Dale continued as a mortgage loan officer for the Bank of Fruitland. Recently, Dale retired after working for Kent County Levy Court for eight years as the Mobile Home Administrator in the Division of Inspection and Enforcement. Dale was a member of the Felton/Viola United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Felton Community Volunteer Fire Company, a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #30, a former member and past president of the Lake Forest Board of Education and a present member of the PolyTech Board of Education. Dale knew and loved many individuals in his community, particularly Felton where he lived all of his life; and he was equally loved by all. He had a great sense of humor and always had a story or a joke to tell. He was known for his homemade lemonade, ice cream and butter mints. He was often found on the sidelines of Lake Forest High School football games running the chains, selling hotdogs at cross country and track meets or just sitting in the stands during various school events. He also enjoyed tinkering and building many things around the house he and Carole lived in for 43 years. Dale and his family also loved the beach. For 44 years, he got his famous tan by spending vacations at Bethany Beach. In his later years, he spent most of his time with the loves of his life - his three granddaughters, Casey, Brianna and Kylie. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carole; his sons, Duane Hammond and his wife Janet, Darren Hammond and his partner Chris Capato, and Drew Hammond; granddaughters, Casey, Brianna and Kylie; goddaughter, Karen Williams; brother, Dorsey Hammond and Joan Buffone; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, and many close special friends. Services were Sunday, Aug. 30, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Interment will be in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Felton/Viola UMC, 101 East Main Street, Felton, DE 19943.
