Willard Wilford Potter, 80

MILFORD - Willard Wilford Potter, a lifelong resident of Milford, passed away Friday, April 6, 2007, in his home. He was 80.

Willard was born in Milford, son of the late Benjamin and Sally (Donovan) Potter.

He was an auto mechanic for Floyd Megee at Megee Motors in Georgetown for 10 years, retiring in 1988. He also worked for Brown Thawley for 25 years, and was co-owner of Potter & Straley in Milford. He held a commercial boat captain license.

Willard was an avid gun collector, loved hunting and fishing, and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He was a member of Temple Lodge 9 AF & AM, and a life member of Memorial Fire Co. in Slaughter Beach.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Willard served aboard the USS GW Squire in the European Theatre of World War II, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6483 in Milford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Marie (Carroll) Potter, in 2005; and a brother, Benjamin Potter.

He is survived by a daughter, Brenda Marie Hurd and her husband Wayne Sr. of Milford; two grandchildren, Wayne Hurd Jr. and his wife Amy of Milford, and Capt. Bob Hurd and his wife Marissa of Fort Bragg, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Hurd, Faith Hurd and Emma Hurd,; three sisters, Stella Warnock, Betty Hitchens and Shirley Stevenson, all of Milford; a brother, Horace Potter of Milford; and Tabby the Cat.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Homes, 119 NW Front St., Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Milford Community Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Memorial Fire Co., RD 1 Box 359, Bay Avenue, Milford, DE 19963; or the Delaware Hospice, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.
