GREENWOOD - Wilbur Lee Cofer of Greenwood departed this life Tuesday, March 13, 2007, in his home. He was 79.
Wilbur was born March 6, 1928, in Smithville, Va., son of the late Ida (Hall) and Tom Cofer.
He was a devout Christian and a faithful lay member for several years at the Fountain of Life Christian Center, Burlington, N.J. As a licensed minister of the Gospel, Wilbur loved ministering to the sick and shut-in, visiting various hospitals and nursing homes on a regular basis. He also found delight in teaching his daughter Biblical principles for daily living. One of his favorite scriptures was 2 Corinthians 5:17, 'Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things become new."
Wilbur joined the U.S. Army in 1945, and after serving 15 years, was given an honorable discharge in 1960. Then, after a successful sales career with the Sears Co., he retired and continued his hobbies that included traveling - especially to Atlantic City, N.J. - sitting on the beach, feeding seagulls and deep sea fishing.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ella Robinson-Cofer, on Dec. 28, 1982. This union was blessed with their adopted daughter, Thelesia El Cofer, whom they loved dearly as their own.
Wilbur was blessed to be joined in holy matrimony to Mary Elizabeth (Massey) DeGrilla on Nov. 6, 1987. To this union were added three stepdaughters, Betty Stone, Janet Badie and Alethia Walters.
Wilbur leaves to cherish his precious memories his wife, Mary Elizabeth DeGrilla-Cofer of Greenwood; one adopted daughter; three stepdaughters; two sisters-in-law, Stella Cofer of Pennsauken, N.J., and Ethel Taylor of Atlantic City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Victory Temple Church, Coverdale Crossroad, Seaford, where friends may view two hours prior. Burial will follow in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.
Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Seaford.
