LAUREL - Wilbert V. Croes of Laurel passed away Friday, March 2, 2007, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was 79.
Mr. Croes was a proud veteran, serving as a medic in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and later, as a mess sergeant in the Maryland Army National Guard"s Salisbury unit.
He retired from Dresser Wayne Industries, Salisbury, after 35 years of service.
He was an avid sports fan, especially of baseball and football. His favorite team was the Philadelphia Phillies.
Mr. Croes was a member of American Legion Post 18, Laurel, and of the Laurel Alumni Association.
He was the preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert Croes and Catherine Davis Croes Ruston; his wife, Ruth Thomas Croes; and a son, Gary Allen Croes.
He is survived by a son, Tom Croes of Laurel; three sisters, Joyce Ruston of Wilmington, Sylvia Gee of Long Neck and Bonnie Ruston of Georgetown; an uncle, Al Croes, and his family, of Wilmington; a nephew, Jim Wootten, and his family; and a longtime companion, Bertha Vanmeter of Salisbury.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel, where friends may call one hour earlier. Ken Athey will officiate.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Laurel Alumni Association, P.O. Box 382 Laurel, DE 19956; or to the Laurel American Legion Post, P.O. Box 329, Laurel, DE 19956.
