The youngest of nine children, he grew up in rural Texas, where he lived until he was drafted into the Army on D-Day. After serving in WWII, Mr. Schaefer worked as part of the Manhattan Project, during the testing phase in the South Pacific. He re-enlisted in the Army Air Corp., which later became the Air Force, from which he retired from SAC Headquarters at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb. on July 1, 1965. Also a member of the SGCC, the Yacht Club, the Officer's Club at Dover AFB, Mr. Schaefer led an active social life, and often admired by many women for his talent on the dance floor. For many years, he was an unofficial member of the GFWC, often supporting his wife in her many activities.
