Hoey, Jr., 73 Walter J. "Buddy" Hoey, Jr. passed away on March 31, 2014. He was 73 years old. When Buddy was born on May 27, 1940, it was published in the hometown paper in Milford that he would be called, "Buddy". He was a true Delawarean, born and bred in Sussex County, and proud of it. He graduated from Milford High School in the class of 1958 and graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1962. He married Cheryl Kramer, from Milton, Delaware. He took a "temporary" job with the Department of Transportation in Dover, Delaware in 1962, and he was employed there for 40 years and retired in 2002. His position there was as a technician in the Materials and Research Department where he approved the materials used by every contractor who worked in the state. It was his job to know the state specifications for everything from the type and number of bolts on the bridges to the grass seed on the medians and the thickness and color of any paint used. He was an avid collector of everything. He loved Wilson's, and Watson's auctions in Milford and Spence's in Dover. He brought something home every week. He was a true Renaissance man. He could fix or build anything. If he'd had money, he would have been called eccentric. He was always busy working on a car or on his house. He loved to travel and he and Cheryl toured all over Europe, Japan, China, and Hawaii. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter, Sr. and Mildred Mayhew Hoey. He is survived by his sister, Bonnie Palmatary and her husband, Harvey, of Lock Haven, Pa.; and his wife of 52 years, Cheryl Kramer Hoey; also, four children, Walter Hoey, III and his wife, Amy, of Milford, Kimberly Hoey Stevenson and her husband, David, of Lewes, Penny Carmack and her husband, Chad, of Hockessin, and Marla Wallace and her husband, Doug, of League City, Texas. He was proud of his grandchildren, Conor and Taylor Hoey, Lydia Stevenson, Kyra and Elyse Carmack, Raini Mosley and Alexandra and Douglas Wallace, Jr. He loved them dearly. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Satruday, April 5, 2014 at Berry Short Funeral Home located on 119 NW Front Street in Milford, DE 19963, where a visitation will be held one hour prior.
