Walter 'Walt' Gemmill
DOB 08/24/1935
Walter "Walt" Gemmill died October 25,2021 at Kent General Hospital Dover, Del. after a severe illness.
He was born August 24, 1935 in Queens, New York. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Eula "Helen" Gemmill; and his dear aunt and uncle, Charles and Delia Wilhelm of Parkton, Maryland; later his mother remarried to Oscar Seifert of Greensboro, Maryland and he graduated from Greensboro High School, Class of 1954.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and retired as a Sergeant from the Dover Police Department. After retirement he worked many years as a seasonal maintenance worker at Killens Pond State Park, and after volunteering to help clear away downed trees from a severe winter ice storm he was awarded the Delaware Trails Volunteer of the year.
He had relatives who died in the Civil war and was very interested in the Civil War and he and his family enjoyed visiting many Civil war battlefields. After retiring he took up hiking. Shenandoah National Park was a favorite place for family trips as well as taking several extended hikes in Alaska, Hawaii and to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. He was a Trekkie and during his illness he enjoyed watching all the Star Trek reruns.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Beverly Gemmill of Felton; his sons, Mark and Daniel, and his wife Lori Ann; a grandson, Jonathan and his wife Kendall; a great grandson Noah; sister-in-law, Donna Keiser and her husband Harry, a dear cousin Alma and her husband Gene Ore; and many other cousins in DE and MD.
The family wishes to thank Delaware Hospice, especially Pam, Tiffany, RN and Latashia for their warmth and caring for Walt and his wife during this difficult time and the Felton and Camden Wyoming Ambulance service for their rapid response to our many calls.
The funeral will be held on beginning with the viewing at 11 a.m. followed by the service at noon, Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden Wyoming Ave., Wyoming DE 19934. Interment will be in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica, Del.
