W. Robert 'Bobby' Newnam Jr., 86 MASSEY - W. Robert "Bobby" Newnam Jr., died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, in his home. He was 86. Mr. Newnam was born on April 23, 1922, son of the late W. Robert Sr., and Lessle Sutton Newnam. He was lifetime resident of Massey where he lived on the Newnam Farm for 83 years, which he owned and operated. During World War II, he proudly served with the U.S. Navy for three years in the South Pacific. While aboard the USS Missouri, the second ship to anchor in Tokyo Bay, on Sept. 2, 1945, he witnessed the unconditional surrender of Japanese forces to Adm. Halsey. He had been President of the Massey Cemetery and his memberships included the Kent County Farm Bureau, the Farmer's Bank Board, was a Charter Member of both Galena and Millington Lions Club, and St. Clement's Episcopal Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene S. Newnam; and a sister, Hazel N. Soesbee. Mr. Newnam is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Chambers Newnam; two daughters, Barbara N. Rice and her husband Richard of Edgewater, and Beverly N. Horner and her husband Bud of Salisbury; and four grandchildren, Susan Rice, Michael Rice, Robert Horner, and Julie Horner. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday. Burial in Massey Cemetery. Family suggests contributions may be made to the Massey Cemetery Fund c/o Galena Funeral Home.
