CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Virginia Martha Cohey Oakes, of Chestertown, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chestertown. She was 86.

Born Sept. 22, 1921, in Queen Anne"s County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Henry and Ella Beatrice Ireland Cohey.

She worked briefly at Vita Foods in Chestertown, and on Feb. 28, 1943, married Lt. Col. William F. Oakes III.

Due to his service with the U.S. Army, they traveled extensively in Europe and the Pacific.

Following his retirement they retired to Chestertown.

Mrs. Oakes served faithfully with the Ladies Auxiliary at the Legion Post Frank M. Jarman American 36 in Chestertown, the Grey Ladies at Chester River Hospital Center, and as a volunteer with Kent County Red Cross.

She was a member of Frank M. Jarman American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 36, where she served as past president and food chairman; the Chester River Yacht and Country Club; and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, all in Chestertown.

Mrs. Oakes enjoyed bowling in her younger years and entertaining friends and family.

Mrs. Oakes is survived by three brothers, Leonard Mason Cohey, Allen Henry Cohey and Mervin Russell Cohey, all of Chestertown; one sister, Betty Cohey Walraven of Millington; and many nieces and nephews, including one very close nephew, Troy Fairbank of Raleigh, N.C.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at the Fellows, Helfenbein, Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown. Interment will be at the Crumpton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Frank M. Jarman Post 36, P.O. Box 322, Chestertown, MD 21620; or to the charity of the donor"s choice.
