BRIDGEVILLE - Virgil A. Cannon of Bridgeville passed away of natural causes Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, in Seaford Center, Seaford. He was 89.
Mr. Cannon was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Bridgeville, son of the late Philip A. and Nora (Willey) Cannon.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and completed his service with an Air Corps base unit.
Mr. Cannon worked as an electrician in field maintenance for the Du Pont Co. for 40 years.
Fishing, crabbing and clamming were very important to him and his family, but he especially enjoyed traveling, and sharing and showing his gas-powered hit-and-miss engines. He also collected antique advertising thermometers.
Mr. Cannon attended Concord United Methodist Church, was a member of the former American Legion Post 21 and assisted in many ways the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Co. over the years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, M. Emily Cannon, in 2003.
He is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Steven C. and Heidi Cannon of Seaford; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Rita and Roger Hovermale of Bridgeville, and Janet and Larry Snyder of Seaford; a sister, Elnora C. Whiteley of Seaford; and six grandchildren, Stacey Cannon, Stephanie Cannon, Robyn Hovermale, Rachel Hovermale, Tiffany Snyder and Bradley Snyder.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The Rev. Diane Melson will officiate.
Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Concord United Methodist Church, c/o Marvin Lloyd, 12560 Concord Road, Seaford, DE 19973.
