DOVER - Thomas Cooper Sr. of Dover died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, in his home, after a lengthy illness. He was 88.
Mr. Cooper was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Willow Grove, son of the late Thomas Henry and Eugenia Cooper.
He received his formal education in the public schools of Kent County.
Mr. Cooper was employed by Dover Ice and Fuel for 19 years, then General Foods, and retired from Eastern Disposal as a truck driver.
He enjoyed the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and later joined Solid Rock Baptist Church where he was baptized on Mother"s Day.
Mr. Cooper was a very caring person and enjoyed repairing things. He was a mechanic at heart. His favorite pastime was horse racing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline; and six siblings, Ivy, Irene, Frank, Nolan, Homer and Lemuel.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Retha May Cooper of Dover; a daughter, Shirley E. Brinkley of Magnolia; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Thomas W. and Lois Cooper of Magnolia, William S. and Cassandra Cooper of Elwood, N.J., and Vernon G. and Sally Cooper of Dover; a sister, Anna Mae Cooper of Dover; 10 grandchildren, Douglas, Sharon, Elaine, Paula, William Jr., Edward, Veronica, Vernon, Christopher and Glenn; three great-grandchildren; six stepdaughters and two stepsons-in-law, Mary and Arthur, Lizzie Pearl, Shirley and Lawrence, Diane, Annie Carol and Barbara; three stepsons and a stepdaughter-in-law, Roce, Roger and Donnie and Theresa; 40 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; seven step-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Solid Rock Baptist Church, West Street, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Sharon Hill Memorial Gardens, Dover.
