DOVER - Sylvia Yarbrough of Dover, passed away peacefully Friday, March 23, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 93.
Mrs. Yarbrough was born in Butler, Ala., daughter of the late Alonzo and Ada Turner.
As a young adult, she graduated from cosmetology school in Birmingham, Ala. and became a licensed beautician.
After many years as a beautician, Mrs. Yarbrough pursued her entrepreneur spirit and opened a successful restaurant for many years.
She then moved to the Bronx, N.Y., where she began a seamstress career and worked for Harvel Rubber Co. for many years. After returning to school and receiving her GED at the age of 61, her passion turned to children and she began to care of them at her home. She helped, raised, inspired and loved children in this manner for many years.
In 1976 she moved to Dover and began another career working in the local school district as a foster grandparent where she developed loving and caring relationships with many of the areas school administrators, teachers and students.
Those who will lovingly remember and miss her are her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Moses and Mieko Johnson, all of Dover; her son and daughter-in-law Mr. Harold Yarbrough and Renee Allen of Virginia Beach, Va.; her grandchildren, Michael Johnson of Abingdon, Md., Roger Johnson of Manhattan, N.Y. and Isaiah and Erikah Yarbrough of Virginia Beach; dear friends, Ewen Machaud of Dover, Billy and Ella Torian of Camden, Mrs. Ella McNair of Dover; and a host of cousins, aunts and friends.
A private service will be conducted.
Flowers may be sent to Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St. Dover on Friday.
