Sue Smith Karcher, 77

GREENSBORO, Md. - Sue Smith Karcher, of Greensboro, died Sunday, March, 8, 2009, in her home. She was 77. She was born May, 22, 1931, in Caroline County, daughter of the late Fred and Elizabeth Billings Smith. Granny, as she was fondly called by many, was employed by the Caroline County Board of Education for 10 years as a bus aide, retiring in 1989. She was also a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church and a past member of Greensboro Volunteer Fire Department where she was an EMT on the ambulance. She dearly loved her family and friends and was extremely proud of her twin grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Francis "Jockey" Karcher; one daughter, Cynthia Harrison and husband Robert of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Daniel S. Downes, USMC and Ashley N. Downes a senior at Frostburg State University; and one niece, Sandra B. Jones of Lenoir, Tenn. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by a sister, Esther S. Blades, died in June of 1987. Visitation will be held at the Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, 106 W Sunset Ave; Greensboro, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009, at 2:00 P.M., from the funeral home. Burial will be in Greensboro Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Caroline Hospice Foundation; 613 5th Ave., Denton, MD 21629. Online condolences may be made via www.fleegleandhelfenbein.com.
