Stephen Paul Hudson Jr.

COOLSPRING - Stephen Paul Hudson, Jr., of Coolspring passed away on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. He was 83. Paul was born in Lewes, the son of Stephen P. and Ella R. Hudson. Paul retired from the Delaware State Police at the rank of Staff Captain in 1976 after a 20 year career. He served as a Youth Officer for several years and created the DSP's first drug abuse education program. From there he moved into criminal investigation and served as Chief Investigator at Troop 4. He ended his career working at DSP Headquarters overseeing the Ordnance Division and serving as Small Arms Instructor at the DSP Academy. The son of a carpenter, Paul was always sketching his next building project and in 1976 he started Coolspring Cabinet which he operated for over 20 years. He was the first certified installer of DuPont Corian© in Southern Delaware, and specialized in kitchen and bath installations and renovations. Paul was also a licensed Federal gunsmith and maintained an active gun repair business in conjunction with his cabinet business. An avid believer in community service, Paul was President of the Harbeson Cemetery Improvement Company for many years, a charter member and the first President of the Henlopen Ruritan Club in Harbeson, served as Board member and President of the Delaware 4-H Foundation, and was a member of the Groome Methodist Church in Lewes. He also served on the Board of Directors for Camp Barnes for several years and was a member of the Delaware State Police Retired Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Lingo Hudson. Paul is survived by his wife, Ann Johnson Hudson; son, Michael A. Hudson and his wife Brenda of Coolspring; daughter, Diana M. "Bunni" Casey and her husband Frank of Coolspring; and stepson, Larry A. Johnson and his wife Donna of Milton. Funeral Services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call at noon. Interment will be in the Harbeson Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Paul may be made to the Delaware State Police Museum, Inc., P.O.
