LAUREL - Shelton Handy of Laurel died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was 57.
Mr. Handy was born in Bloxom, Va., son of Everett Brooks Dickerson and the late Peggy Handy. He was reared by his late uncle and aunt, Preston "Sonny" and Virginia "Ginny" Hickman.
He was a 1967 graduate of Mary Nottingham Smith High School, now a middle school in Accomac, Va. He later attended Delaware Technical & Community College, Georgetown.
Upon graduation, Mr. Handy enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country for 17 years.
He was employed by Tyson Foods and Perdue Inc., and was the owner and operator of the Eastern Shore Casket Co., Laurel.
Mr. Handy was a member of First Baptist Church, Salisbury, for 26 years. He transferred his membership to Family Worship Center and New Dimensions Ministries, where he served as a member of the Deacon Board, Men of Power and the Men of Issachar.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a twin brother, Sherman Handy, in November 1974.
He is survived by his father, Everett Brooks Dickerson of Salisbury; his wife of 32 years, Catherine (DeShields) Handy; a daughter and a son-in-law, Wanda and James Conley Sr. of Edgewood, Md.; two grandchildren, James Conley II and Aliya Conley; a brother and a sister (married), Marshall Handy and Deborah Handy, both of Bloxom; a stepmother, Doris Dickerson of Salisbury; a half-brother, Danny Dickerson of Salisbury; a stepbrother and a stepsister-in-law, Clifton and Patricia Wright of Salisbury; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be noon Saturday in New Dimensions Ministries, Westside Youth Club, Billy Gene Jackson Park, Salisbury, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Jolley Memorial Chapel, Salisbury.
Burial will be in Springhill Memory Gardens, Hebron, Md.
