FELTON - Sharon Diane Mietus passed away peacefully at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Sharon was born in North Tonawanda, N.Y. to the late Robert Herrmann and Gladys Herrmann. She was a proud Air Force wife who found her way to Delaware in the early seventies. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and leader with the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council. She also loved the outdoors and spent her younger years going camping, hiking, fishing, crabbing and clamming with her family. She especially loved fall with all its brilliant foliage and in summer, could find beauty within the waves on sandy shores. Some of Sharon's favorite pastimes included flower arranging and ceramics. She also had a successful career in banking. Sharon loved to travel and spent a month journeying across the country. One of the places she always wanted to return to was Hawaii, which she visited with her husband of 51 years, Tom. She carried memories of this "happy place" with her until her final days. In her later years, where she could be found more at home, she was an avid backyard birder and loved having beautiful flowers everywhere. Her favorite were roses but she enjoyed orchids and always had mums planted in the fall. She acquired a passion for photography, loved wildlife and took pictures of everything, including many poodles that stayed constantly by her side. Sharon enjoyed poetry and even penned a few poems of her own. She also found a common ground with her granddaughter when they both realized that they shared a favorite, The Highwayman, by Alfred Noyes. Sharon also was a collector of many things. Lighthouses were among her favorite, especially those by the Painter of Light and so also being a woman of faith, Sharon attended St. Polycarp Parish with her family, when her health would allow. Sharon left the Earth far too soon but when she was here she lived her life remembering that God was with her and would remain by her side for whatever came her way. In addition to her parents, Sharon was preceded in death by her step-mother, Louella Herrmann; step-sister, Mary Lou Flaminio; and devoted poodles, Thumper, Brandy and Cara; as well as many other beloved pets. Sharon is survived by her husband, Thomas Mietus; children, Raymond (Kathy) Mietus , Vickie (Scott) Henderson; step-siblings, Anthony Flaminio, Barbara Flaminio, and Donna Kowal; grandchildren, Tim Eckard, Emily Mietus and Serenity Henderson; and many other family members and friends, not to mention her two newest poodles, Sandy and Mandy, which when visiting at the hospital, brought a smile to her face. She will be sadly missed by all; yet we are at peace knowing that although she endured much physical pain, she is now in God's loving hands and can once again walk on white, sandy shores. A prayer service will be held in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, Main St., Felton, DE 19943 on September 24, 2016 at 2:30 p.m., where friends may call after 2 pm. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sharon's memory can be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
