HARRINGTON - Sara Emily Cain Masten of Harrington died Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, in Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury, Md. She was 84.
She was born in Harrington to the late Charles Wesley Cain and Nellie Florence Sipple Cain.
Mrs. Masten graduated from Harrington High School in 1941.
She then went to Beacon College and then to Delaware Technical & Community College to receive an associates degree.
Mrs. Masten retired from the Lake Forest School District in 1984 after 21 years of service as a financial secretary.
She also served as a secretary to her brother, Rep. George W. Cain for two years.
Her favorite pastimes included quilting, sewing, playing cards, knitting, traveling and entertaining family or friends.
Mrs. Masten will be remembered by her family as a loving mother and grandmother who always put her family and friends needs above her own.
She was an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church of Harrington.
Mrs. Masten was a past chairman of the Administrative Council, secretary for the Administrative Council, and president of the Choir Mothers Auxilliary.
She was also a member of the Women of the Moose of Harrington, Delaware Education Secretaries Association, Bridge Club, and Quilting Guild.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Robert John Masten Sr.; brothers, George W. and William Cain; sister, Elsie Cain Nelte; and a great-granddaughter, Reina Masten.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert John and Marge Masten Jr. and David Walter and Phyllis Masten, all of Harrington; a daughter and a son-in-law, Lisa and Terry Helsel of Harrington; a special adopted daughter, Mariate Gomez Bernardo of Madrid, Spain; grandchildren and their spouses, Robert J. and Debra Masten III, Christopher and Tina Masten, Kathryn and Raymond Blanchette, Robert Dean Helsel, Lynne Ann Helsel; step grandchildren and spouses, Christopher and Jenn Helsel, Jocelyn and Robert Queen, Rhonda and Troy Palmer, and Greg Hull; great-grandchildren, Savannah Masten, Elaine Masten, Ryah Masten, Carmen and Anthony Blanchette; step great-grandchildren, Nick Palmer, Alex Palmer, and Aaron Queen; and several cousins, nieces, nephews.
Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Highway, Harrington, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
