Samuel Richard Spangler

DOVER - Samuel Richard "Dick" Spangler, of Dover, died Friday, April 21, 2011, at home. He was 81. Mr. Spangler was born Jan. 18, 1930, in Philadelphia, to the late Samuel and Dorothy Rawley Spangler. He grew up in Leipsic, and rang the Leipsic School bell announcing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. From 1963 until his illness, Mr. Spangler owned and operated B&R Motors in central Kent County. In addition to his parents, Mr. Spangler was preceded in death by stepson, John C. Hatfield; and sisters, Doris Magee and Gladys Moor. Mr. Spangler is survived by his daughter, Holly Powell and her husband Dan of Felton; four sons, Richard McCoy of West Palm Beach, Fla. and his wife Debbie, Monty Spangler and his wife Mardi Pyott of Dover, Paul Spangler of Dover, and Samuel Richard Spangler, Jr. and his wife Michele of Dover; brother, Donald Spangler of Binghampton, N.Y.; ten grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua, Melissa, Renee, Ryan, Michael, Timmy, Ivan, Trevor, and Marina; and three great-grandchildren, Alexander, Claire, and Alice. Funeral services will be noon, Wednesday, April 27, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. In lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his memory to American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way # 205, New Castle, DE 19720-1633.
