Samuel George Hurlock, 85

NORTH EAST, MD - Samuel George Hurlock, formerly of Crumpton, died Tuesday, October 13, 2009, at Chester River Hospital Center in Chestertown. He was 85. Samuel G. Hurlock was born July 31, 1924 in Crumpton, Md. the son of the late Samuel David Hurlock and Hilda Virginia Brinsfield. Mr. Hurlock was a 1941 graduate of Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1942 he married Myrtle Irene Renye. He was then drafted into the United States Army, where he served during WWII and received the Purple Heart. Mr. Hurlock was the 1st Chief of Crumpton Volunteer Fire Department as well as past president and a charter and life member. In addition he was a MFRI instructor and inducted in the Kent and Queen Anne's Fire Association Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Elkton Volunteer Fire Department and the VFW in North East, MD. He retired from the Maryland State Forestry Dept., in Cecil after 18 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching NASCAR and his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt. His favorite pastime was eating Ice Cream. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, James David Hurlock, his two brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Irene Hurlock of Crumpton; three daughters, Judy Truitt of Ingleside, Linda Hamann of Crumpton, Janet Boyd of Alexandria, Va.; two sons, Samuel G. Hurlock Jr. of Camden, Del., James A. Hurlock of Crumpton; one sister, Virginia Ann Doyle of Pa.; one brother, Kenneth Leon Hurlock of Pa; long time companion, Lois Bevins of North East, Md.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 Cypress St. Millington, Md., where friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be held in Crumpton Cemetery in Crumpton. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Crumpton Vol. Fire Dept., P.O. Box 68, Crumpton, MD 21628 or Crumpton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 343, Crumpton, MD 21628.
