DOVER - Ruth Eleanor Wharton passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Ruth was born on June 9, 1945 in Beverly, New Jersey to the late Dorothy and Renodyne Burgess.
Ruth was raised in New Jersey and New York. After spending most of her life raising her family in southern New Jersey, in 1979, she followed her mother and family to Delaware. She began working at Hartly Market and also waitressed at many restaurants including Hollywood Diner, Nikos' Restaurant, Kirby and Holloway, Harrington Casino and several other local restaurants. In her free time, Ruth enjoyed crocheting and doing word searches. She also loved spending time with all of her family, including her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two older brothers, Gordon Burgess and Frederick Allen Burgess.
Ruth is survived by children, Tammi Norsworthy and Dave Parker, both of Dover and Amanda Wharton (Schuiler Kennedy) of Smyrna; siblings, William Burgess of Hartly, Lisa (Brian) Walsh of Smyrna and Sherri (Charles Sr.) Rucker of Clayton; seven grandchildren, John Jr., Nathan, Amber, Nicole, Alexa, Amara, Marley and three great grandchildren, Grayson, Colton and Josie.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd (Rt. 10), Dover. Friends may call an hour prior. Services will be streamed online for those who cannot be in attendance, www.facebook.com/torbertfuneralchapels.
