VIOLA - Russell H. Vockel Jr., of Viola, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2008, in the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia. He was 51.

He was born on Dec. 5, 1956, in Milford, to the late Russell and Mildred (Gallo) Vockel Sr.

Russell grew up in Dover and graduated from Dover High School in 1975.

He attended the University of Delaware for two years, majoring in horticulture.

Since the age of 15 Russell worked in the Dover and Milford areas and acquired many friends.

He was an accomplished carpenter, owning his business, Russell H. Vockel Jr. Home Repairs.

He loved to work with his hands to create beautiful things.

Russell's love of music touched the hearts of many. He loved playing the guitar and singing. When he played music he was at his happiest.

Fishing was one of Russell's favorite pastimes. He enjoyed spending the day with anyone who wanted to go fishing.

He also enjoyed hunting and spent many hours doing that with friends.

Russell and his girls, Carrie and Susan, spent many hours searching for Native American artifacts.

He had quite a collection he was very proud of.

One of Russell's greatest loves was his grandson, Gauge. He was his happiest when Gauge was around.

Russell will be missed by his family and friends. He will always be in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mona Lisa Vockel.

Russell is survived by daughter, Carrie Vockel of Wyoming; daughter, Susan Vockel and her companion Sam Shockley of Wyoming; sister, Teresa Fitzgerald of Mississippi and her companion Christopher Gray of Viola; and a grandson, Gauge Pierce.

Remembrance services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Burial will be at the Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to American Lung Association, 422 S. Governors Ave., Dover, DE 19904.
