PINEHURST, N.C. - Rufus E. Bowland Jr. died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at his home in Pinehurst. He was 95.

Mr. Bowland was born Oct. 14, 1912, in Wilmington, Del., son of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus E. Bowland Sr.

He graduated from DuPont High School in Old Hickory, Tenn., in 1927 and from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., in 1931, at the age of 19.

After graduation, he joined the E.I. DuPont deNemours Co. in Old Hickory and later helped open the world's first plant for the commercial production of nylon in Seaford, Del.

He retired from DuPont in 1972 and moved to Pinehurst.

An avid amateur golfer, Mr. Bowland won several club championships throughout the Delmarva Peninsula, and was a 13-time champion of the Seaford Golf and Country Club.

He served as president of the Pinehurst Country Club and was a member of the Tin Whistles, a national golf organization created in 1904 in Pinehurst.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Louise Wolford Bowland.

He is survived by one daughter, Beth Thackery of Hoschton, Ga.; four sons, Rufus E. (Skip) Bowland III of Pinehurst, William Bowland of Seaford, Charles Bowland of Stevensville, Md., and David Bowland of Seaford; and 12 grandchildren.

The family requests that memorials be made to First Health Hospice, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.
