Roland Lenwood Spellman, 62
DOVER - Roland Lenwood Spellman, son of Elder Andrew L. and Maude M. Spellman, was born April 21, 1947, in Lincoln. He departed this life on July 8, 2009, at the age of 62 years. Roland spent the most of his adult life in the military serving his country. He was saved and baptized at an early age at his father's church, New Shiloh F.B.H. Church, Ellendale, where he grew up. He was a loving son, brother, friend and father. Roland loved helping others and received an award for community services for helping to distribute food to the needy. Roland attended Ellendale Elementary School and William C. Jason Comprehensive High School in Georgetown where he was the sports manager to his coach. He graduated in 1965. He loved to play sports. He also loved "Corvettes." He joined the Armed Forces right out of high school. His many tours of duty took him overseas to Germany, Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm and Panama as well as the United States. His last station was Fort Orde in California. During his service in the Army, he was a Master Chef and loved his job. He retired as a Master Sergeant and was also a Warrant Officer. He is survived by his wife, Olga Spellman of Salinas, Calif.; his children, Sandra Alberecht (Marc) of Germany, Annie Shaw Spellman of Illinois, Keisha Spellman, and two step-children, Yvonne and James Martinez of Salinas, Calif., that he helped to raise, as well as three beautiful grandchildren, Lillie Aberecht of Germany, Josiah and Mia Martin of Salina, Calif., and his father and mother, Andrew and Maude Spellman, both of Ellendale. He leaves behind eleven siblings, McCoy Spellman (Nancy) of San Diego, Calif., Miriam Celestine Harris (Luke) of Dover, his twin, Ronald Spellman (Rhonda) of Texas, Leola Spellman Coutourier of Dover, Matthew Spellman (Diya) of San Diego, Calif., Linda B. Spellman of Ellendale, Weldon Spellman (Patricia) of Bear, Timothy Spellman (Veverly) of Dover, Charlotte Wood (Robert) of Catonsville, Md., Thornton Spellman (Lisa) of Dover, Gracie Burke (Clifford) of San Diego, Calif., and a host of aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Spellman were Tuesday, July 21, at the Pentecostal Church of God of Lincoln, 9163 Greentop Road, Lincoln, where friends called from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Interment was in Delaware Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
