Roland H. Metzner, 84 MILFORD - Roland H. Metzner, 84, of Milford, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Milford Memorial Hospital, Bayhealth Medical Center. Mr. Metzner was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late Harry G. and Anna L. (Reynolds) Metzner. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He worked for Brown Thawley in Milford for 31 years as a parts manager and salesman of farm machinery as well as a car salesman, selling Cryslers and Plymouths. He also worked as plant manager for Kirby & Holloway Provision Company in Harrington for 12 years before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Greenwood V.F.W. and was a Ham Radio Operator K3RM Extra Class. For many years, he was a part of MARS NET, a group that would traffic messages for service men to their families. He was a member of both the Milford and Frederica Senior Centers; played tenor banjo in the Back Bay Strummers Band, was an avid gardener and a handyman. He also enjoyed watching movies, especially westerns. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary H. Metzner in 1985; a brother, Vernon Metzner; and a sister, Isabelle Patterson. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; three sons, Roland H. Metzner II and his wife Sallie of Milford, Philip N. Metzner and his wife Jean of Barney, Ga., and Robert D. Metzner and his wife Alice of Milford; a daughter-in-law, Denise Pent of Dover; a brother, Frank C. Metzner and his wife Lona of Lewes; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford. Burial was in Whites Chapel Cemetery, Lewes.
