PENNSVILLE, N.J. - Robert E. Shiles, Sr. (Pop Pop), of Pennsville, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, after a long and happy life surrounded by his loving family. Born in Woodbury, N.J., in 1921, he was the son of Earl and Julia Shiles. Robert attended Pennsville Grammar School and graduated from Salem High School in 1940. He married Norma (nee Rhubart) in 1943 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage until her death in 2003. He served in the US Army/ Air Corps as a first lieutenant from 1943 - 1945. He flew 35 missions in the European theater as a B-24 bombadier conducting secret night solo missions dropping supplies to the French Underground, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle East Ribbon with 2 Battle Stars. Upon completion of his military service, he began work as a machinist at the DuPont Chambers works, retiring as the supervisor of Central Crafts in 1980. He was well-known for his craftsmanship, especially with wood, and his ability to fix anything. He was an avid sports fan, especially Pennsville HS wrestling, and Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies teams. He is survived by his children, Robert, Jr. (Karen) of Georgetown, Del., Janice Griffith of Pennsville, James of Garberville, Calif., Steven (Deborah) of Martinez, Calif., Lorraine Galloway of Pennsville, Pamela Hogan (Jeffrey) of Pennsville, Michael (Michele) of Garberville, Calif., and Tammy Robertson (John) of Pennsville. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, parents, sisters, Doris Norris and Virginia Still Stockdale, son-in-law, Earl Griffith, and daughter-in-law, Patricia Carpenter Shiles. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13, at the Laughrey Funeral Home, Pennsville where friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery, Pilesgrove. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Salem County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Pennsville Visiting Nurses, or the Salem County Veterans Association.
