Robert E. Messick

Farmington - Robert E. Messick went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the age of 84. Mr. Messick was born April 8, 1930 in Hickman, DE. He was the son of Floyd and Marie Messick. He graduated from Greenwood High School, Class of 1948. After working at O.A. Newton and Son, he entered the Army serving in the Korean War. After the Army, he began work at Dover Air Force Base and became a Head Loadmaster retiring in 1985 after 33 years. Mr. Messick was a long time member of the Farmington Church of the Brethren. Recently, he received recognition for serving as Treasurer of the Farmington Vol. Fire Co. for 40 years, "Fireman of the Year" in 1986 and 1999. He served on Greenwood and Woodbridge School Board for 13 years. He coached for the Woodbridge Little League in the 80's. He served as Treasurer for the Harrington Democrat Club. He served on the Executive Board of the Greenwood Alumni Association and was Chairman of their Chicken BBQ Fundraiser, each year. Every year you could find Bob at the Delaware State Fair in the Dover Building where he served as the Superintendent of the Farm Products. He was also a Delaware State Fair Director. Bob and his wife Ruth Ann founded the Peach Blossom 4-H Club and had many members for 40 years. He received the Joy Sparks 4-H Spirit Award in 2012. Mr. Messick is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Ann Vincent Messick; and three daughters, Rebecca (Daniel) Vanderwende, Rita (Donnie) Lofland and Rochelle (Townsend) Yerkes; Pop-pop Bob was a grandfather to eight grandchildren, Breck (Pam) Vanderwende, Danna (Shane) Carter, Christy (Scott) Wright, Amber (John) Vanderwende, Derek Lofland, Devon (Eric) Crescenze, Tyler (Stephanie) Yerkes and Lauren Yerkes; and great-grandfather to Alanna Vanderwende, Maci Carter, Brielle Carter and Aydan Vanderwende and Baby Wright. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the Farmington Fire Hall. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 2 at 2 p.m. at the Farmington Fire Hall. Interment will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Bethany Church of the Brethren, 91 School St., Farmington, DE 19950 or Farmington Vol. Fire Co. 20920 S. DuPont Hwy. Farmington, De 19950.
