DOVER - Robert Calvin Cook passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Delaware Veterans Home, Milford. Mr. Cook was born June 15, 1924 in Salem, Mass. to the late Carl S. Cook and Eleanor Purtell Cook. He was a veteran of WWII, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Cook entered and retired from the United States Navy in Newport, R.I. as a Petty Officer 2nd Class serving his country from 1941 to 1962. He served on the USS New Mexico as a Gunner and Postal Clerk during WWII. Other assignments included Alaska and Hawaii before they were states and various ships of the Atlantic and Pacific. During his 21 years of service he received many awards which included Purple Heart for wounds received in action 1945, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal 8 Stars, American Defense, National Defense, WWII Victory, China Service, Philippine Liberation Ribbon 1 Star, American Campaign, Asia Occupation and Navy Good Conduct Medal 5 Stars. Mr. Cook worked as a Federal Civil Service employee for 15 years in Wakefield and Newport, R.I. and retired as a Postal Clerk in Newport, June 1979. After his retirement he and his wife Marie moved to Glendale, Ariz. until 2007 when they moved to Dover, to be close to his son David and his wife Elaine. He was active in Cub Scouting for 23 years as Assistant Cub Master, Cub Master and District Commissioner from 1955 to 1978. Mr. Cook was a life member of the VFW, DAV, American Battleship Association, Fleet Reserve, Navy Mail Service Veterans Association and Military Order of the Purple Heart. Mr. Cook enjoyed model making, collecting key chains and match covers from their travels through all 50 states during his military career and after retirement. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, David W. Cook, 09/11/2015; brothers, Roland and Harry Cook; and sisters, Lotta, Lois, and Marie. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Marie Courtemanche Cook of Dover; sons, Paul R. Cook and his wife Gail of Matthews, N.C., and Bruce E. Cook of Georgetown, Texas; daughter-in-law, Elaine Cook of Dover; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12 noon, Friday, April 8, 2016 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover, DE 19901. Friends may call one hour prior. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Boys Town National Headquarters, 200 Flanagan Boulevard, PO Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 68010 or St Jude's Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
