Richard L. Krueger Sr.

SMYRNA - Richard L. Krueger Sr. died Jan. 20, 2012, at Milford Delaware Hospice, surrounded by his family. He was born Feb. 20, 1940, in Hammond, Ind., to the late Fred and Naomi Krueger. He attended high school in East Chicago, Ind.. He was a graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, where he received a BS in Education and a MS. While at the university he sang with the Singing Hoosiers for five years. Upon graduation he was brought to Delaware by an education committee to establish the first state film library. He attended Villanova University receiving a degree in library science. He worked in the Department of Public Instruction as media Supervisor, Library/Media Supervisor, Coordinator of ESEA Title II funds for school libraries and a computer researcher. Upon retirement from DPI in 1991, he worked briefly at Delaware Technical and Community College and in 1994 became the Director of the Kent County Department of Libraries under the administration of Mr. Robert McLeod. He started the Kent County Library during his service with Kent County. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 2009. He was a Rotarian for over 25 years and was fortunate to travel with his wife to England and Europe visiting Rotarian friends over 17 times in a 25 year period. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Esther H. Krueger; son, Richard Jr.; stepdaughter, Rebecca Manahan Martin of Dover and husband John Edward; grandson, Kevin Robeson and his wife Farrah Robeson; great-grandson, Mason Robeson of Milford; nephews, David and Frank Angstadt; and niece, Charlene Chappell and numerous great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by numerous relatives in the Midwest; a special cousin, Sherry and David Melendez and their children, Allison, Emily and Grant in Indiana. Services will be noon, Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 S. State St., Dover. Greetings will be from 10 a.m. to noon. Donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; or the music department of the Presbyterian Church of Dover.
