Richard K. Carlson

DOVER - Richard K. "Dick" Carlson died on Jan. 4, 2012, at Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover. He was 80. Richard was born in Quincy, Mass., in 1931 and moved to Delaware in 1957. He was preceded in passing by his father, mother, sister, first wife, Elma Jaynes Carlson, and his second wife, Hazel M. Carlson. He is survived by his son, Derek T. Carlson and wife Melanie of Dover; his stepdaughter Jennifer Thompson Roy and her husband Jamie; granddaughters, Ashley and Hannah Roy of Dover; and stepson, Thom Thompson of Wilmington. Richard was a graduate of Northeastern University and did graduate work at the University of Delaware and advanced studies at the University of Connecticut, University of Wisconsin, Case-Western University, Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. Richard started his career with Dupont and later moved to International Latex Corporation (Playtex) and through sales, mergers and acquisitions retired in 1997 from Reichold Chemicals having been the Director of Human Relations. After retirement he did consulting work with various companies. He was co-owner, with his first wife Elma Jaynes Carlson, of Jaynes Carlson Realty Ltd., which closed after her death. Richard was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the Air Force. He served as a gunner, flying B-29 bombing missions over North Korea. Along with decorations earned, he was credited with saving the life of his tail gunner during combat. Throughout Richard's career he wrote for various trade journals. He had been an instructor at Wesley College, as well as, for the State of Delaware Continuing Education Programs. He was a past President of the Delaware Personnel Association, served on advisory committee's for the University of Delaware, and various continuing education programs for other area colleges. He was a member of the Society of Training and Development, The US Coast Guard Auxiliary, The Central Delaware Civil War Round Table, Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Korean War Veterans Association of Delaware. Funeral services will be private at Richard's request. Flowers will not be accepted, however if you would like to make a donation, in Richard's name, please do so to the American Cancer Society.
