GREENSBORO, Md. - Richard "Rusty" Albert Rostien of Greensboro died Friday, June 8, 2007, in Caroline Nursing Home, Denton. He was 81.
Mr. Rostien was born in Manahawkin, N.J., and moved to Greensboro at an early age with his parents and siblings. He was the fourth of five children born to Conrad Carl and Anna Marie Strohmeier Rostien.
Following service during World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard PT Boats in the South Pacific, he returned home to marry Phyllis Anne Nashold.
They then moved to Chicago, where he earned a degree in architectural engineering from the Chicago Technical Institute, then returned to settle in Greensboro, where they raised their family.
Upon returning to Greensboro from Chicago, Richard was employed by the Nuttle Lumber Co. for a short time before he accepted employment with the U.S. government at Dover Air Force Base.
He retired from the government in 1985. Richard and Phyllis enjoyed dance parties with their friends and family as well as their traditional annual family vacations along the Skyline Drive. Upon retirement they very much enjoyed spending the winter months in their home in Florida.
Richard and Phyllis were married for more than 45 years before she passed away on March 11 1995.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Phyllis Anne, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Helen Marie Kalsch, Jack Conrad Rostien, Leroy Edward Rostien and David Karl Rostien.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Jay and Brenda Lord Rostien, Jeffry Kim and Marcia Lynn Magruder Rostien, Rick and Marsha Rostien Sharp, Devereaux and Renee Orendorf Rostien, all of Greensboro; his grandchildren, Richard "Rusty" Rostien of Greensboro, Erin Rostien Johnson of Georgia, Jeffry Cory Rostien of Virginia, Matthew Blaine Rostien, Andrew Harrison Rostien, Lauren Danielle Sharp, Devereaux Tyler Rostien and Jordyn Renee Rostien, all of Greensboro; and a great-grandson, Dylan Jacob Rostien.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, P.A., Greensboro.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Greensboro Cemetery.
