The Rev. John A. Irwin, 79

SEAFORD - The Rev. John A. Irwin, of Seaford, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at Seaford Genesis Healthcare. He was 79.

He was born in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, son of the late George R. and Bertha (Swartz) Irwin.

A graduate of Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky., and Westminster (Md.) Theological Seminary, the Rev. Irwin was a Methodist minister for 40 years, retiring in 1993.

The Rev. Irwin and his wife, Edith, served many charges in Delaware and Maryland, including Grace United Methodist Church, Millsboro, Newark United Methodist Church, Salem United Methodist Church, Selbyville, Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Seaford, Centenary United Methodist Church, Laurel, and Zion United Methodist Church, Cambridge, Md.

A 32nd Degree Mason, he was a member of the Doric Lodge, Millville, and a member the York Rite Chapter, Council and Commandery. He was also the grand chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Delaware and past Puissant Sovereign of Delaware, Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine.

He was also an avid model railroader and a member and past president of the Delmarva Model Railroad Club.

His beloved wife of 57 years, Edith H. Irwin, died in 2006.

He is survived by three sons, John L. Irwin and his wife Lynne of Laurel, Mark E. Irwin and his wife Melanie of Sykesville and Andrew J. Irwin and his wife Sally of Salisbury, Md.; two sisters, Adda Zimmerman of Upper Sandusky and Katherine Smith of Woodburn, Ohio; and four grandchildren, John T. Irwin, Seth Irwin, Sean Irwin and Jessica Irwin.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Centenary United Methodist Church, Laurel, where friends may call one hour prior. The Rev. John Van Tine and the Rev. Fred Duncan will officiate.

Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.

Memorial donations are suggested to Centenary United Methodist Church, 200 W. Market St., Laurel, DE 19956.
