WARWICK, Md. - Raymond James Gatewood, of Warwick, departed this life Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, in the Perry Point Veterans Affairs Hospital, Perry Point. He was 74.

He was born Oct. 10, 1932.

He received his early education in Cecilton Elementary School and George Washington Carver High School.

Raymond was a faithful and dedicated husband, loving and caring father, grandfather, foster father, brother and friend.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged April 1961.

After the military, he worked as a construction worker for many years.

After retiring from construction he and his wife became foster parents for many children.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Sarah Gatewood; five sons, Sheldon Gatewood, Brandon Gatewood and Anthony Gatewood, all of Warwick, Raymond Gatewood Jr. of Miami and Raheem Cannon of Wilmington, Del.; six daughters and a son-in-law, Sheila Dupervile and Alison Morman, both of Homestead, Fla., Terrell Gibbs and JuVonya and Adrian Sr. Wisher, all of Warwick, Ashley Gatewood of Wilmington and Shaunta Cannon of Middletown, Del.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, R. Morris and Edna Gatewood of Cecilton and Richard Gatewood of Middletown; five sisters and a brother-in-law, Annie Hughes of Deptford, N.J., Mamie Carroll and Mary Gatewood, both of Cecilton, Sarah Burks of Elkton and May and George Sr. Berry of Townsend, Del.; one aunt, Arrie Moore of Elkton; one uncle, Crawford Brinkley of Cecilton; 16 grandchildren including a devoted grandson, Aaron Wisher and namesake Raymond Cannon; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Brown of Middletown and Sharon Ringgold Omwange of Newark, Del.; three brothers-in-law, Larry Gibbs of Pleasantville, N.J., Paul Gibbs of Smyrna, Del., and Perry Ringgold of Warwick; one goddaughter, Kathleen Holloway; and a host of loving and devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Rehoboth Apostolic Church of God, Middletown, where friends may view two hours prior.

Burial will be in Bohemian Manor Cemetery in Chesapeake City.

Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home,Chestertown.
