CAMBRIDGE - Randy N. Whaples, 47, social worker and activist for the disabled, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 19, 2007.
He was born in Chicopee, Mass. on June 6, 1959 and was a son of Patricia Robbins Whaples and Lester N. Whaples.
Randy attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge-South Dorchester High School in 1977. He received his Bachelor of Social Work Degree from Salisbury State College in 1985 and his master's of education in 1990 from Salisbury State University.
On April 13, 1991 he was married to the former Anne King. Randy was a licensed social worker and worked primarily with long time care. He retired from the Caroline Nursing Center in 2006, and also served as the first executive director of the Eastern Shore Center for Independent Living. He was an advocate for the rights of the disabled population and did pro bono work for the ACLU of Maryland and the Maryland Disability Law Center.
He was also a member and past president of the Cambridge Lions Club. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Marylander with a Disability Award of Merit from Gov. Glendenning in 1997, and was an Exempt Member of Rescue Fire Co. where he was also a Past President.
Randy had been in failing health for the past several years.
Survivors include his wife, Anne K. Whaples of Cambridge; one son, Graham N. Whaples of Severna Park; a stepson, Matthew W. King of Cambridge; his mother, Patricia A. Whaples of Cambridge; his father, Lester N. Whaples of Cambridge; one sister, Leslie E. Dempster of Cambridge; a brother-in-law, Jeff M. Dempster of Cambridge; one nephew and Godson, Adam Dempster of Salisbury and several aunts and uncles and cousins. Randy is also survived by his father-in-law, Stanley W. King of Taneytown.
His mother-in-law, Shirley W. King, preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church on Race Street in Cambridge with Pastor Ray Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Members of Rescue Fire Co. Inc. will participate in the service.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
Pallbearers will be Adam Dempster, Scott Hubbard, Gene Robbins, Wesley Cannon, William C. Press III and O'Neal Insley. Honorary bearers will be Joseph Willey, Charles Thomas, Karol Redline, Calvin Stack and Beverly Spicknall.
