Nelson E. Chorman, 77
MILTON - Nelson E. Chorman, a lifetime resident of Milton, passed into the arms of Jesus Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 77.
Mr. Chorman was born April 14, 1930, to the late Harold H. and Elizabeth Mae (Campbell) Chorman.
He was known in the community as a farmer, gardener, masonry contractor and home day care provider since his masonry disability in 1975, when he closed Chorman and Sons Masonry due to a tragic and sudden workplace injury.
Mr. Chorman and his wife, Alma, started a home-based day care that flourished in the 1980s, serving many local families with a day care opportunity that many of the day care children identify with today as being "their second set of grandparents."
Mr. and Mrs. Chorman took great pride in the kids from the day care and watched them grow into fine community-minded citizens.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Alma (Shockley) Chorman, in 2001; three brothers, William Chorman, in 1985, Davis Chorman, in 1987, and Donald Chorman, in 2002.
Mr. Chorman is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary N. and Tracy L. Chorman; three grandchildren, Patrick H. Chorman, Logan C. Chorman and Camden C. Chorman, all of Milton; three sons that he and Alma raised as their own, Bruce A. Chorman and his wife, Deborah E. and children, Karen E., Sarah R. and Bruce Jr., all of Milton, Raymond Chorman and his wife, Jane and children, Erin and Brittany, all of Milford, and Edward Chorman and his wife, Donna, also of Milford; two stepsons and their families, Jack L. Herr and wife, Georgianna, and children, Brandon Herr and Lindsey Herr Groamwalski, of Orlando, Fla., and Michael W. Herr and wife, Susie, and children, Holly, Heather and Jonathan, of Springfield, Mo.
Mr. Chorman loved his church, Whites Chapel in Milton, where he was baptized and will be laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. He was very active in many capacities with the church and attended Sunday services regularly.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Whites Chapel Cemetery, Coastal Highway, Milton.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church c/o Shirley Millman, 32149 Oak Drive, The Oaks, Lewes, DE 19958.
