DOVER - Morris Leroy Ryder Sr. of Dover was taken to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at home. He was 72.
Mr. Ryder was the son of the late George and Margurite Ryder.
He was born and raised in Dover, where he attended high school at Delaware State College. He also attended the University of Hawaii.
Mr. Ryder served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea.
Afterwards, he found employment at General Foods, Dover, where he worked for 23 years. While there he served as a union representative.
Mr. Ryder was president of the NAACP of Dover. He also served on various other committees.
Assistant Pastor Ryder was always ready to serve in his community. He attended the Church of the Living God for 50 years. While there he received his salvation and the Holy Spirit. He learned to play the piano and taught Sunday school. He was ordained as a minister in 1957 and converted many souls.
In addition his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Robert; his uncles, Benjamin and Winfield Washington; and his beloved grandson, John Vincent Ryder Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Ryder of Dover; his children, Angela and George Davis of Smyrna, Morris Leroy Ryder II of Wilmington, Carmen Ryder of Dover, Donna Ryder of Dover, John Ryder of Dover and Marc and Dana Ryder of Baltimore; his grandchildren, Dominique Belle, Danielle Belle, Morris Ryder III, Deborah Ryder, Harry Burton and Darlene Ryder; one great-grandchild, Jeremiah Belle; his brothers and sisters, Dorothy Valdez, Charles and Deborah Ryder, Geraldine and Freddie Depp, Sylvia Vean and Priscilla Ryder; a sister-in-law, Zelma Ryder Adams; and a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bibleway Church of God in Christ, Dover, where friends may view two hours prior.
Burial will be in the Harris family plot in Dover.
