DENVER, Colorado - Maura Nadel passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Porter Hospice in Englewood, Colo. Maura was born on February 4, 1924 in Springfield, Mass. to the late Ignatius Augustine McEwan and Jane McEwan. Her parents returned to Scotland a couple of years later with Maura and her older brother and sister. At a very early age, she won contests in Italian, earning her two trips to the Vatican with her father. After school years, Maura taught herself to perform various secretarial tasks. She was a very skilled typist, able to type 110 wpm, and was recognized as an accomplished medical transcriptionist. She also was a strong businesswoman, being very instrumental in the opening of her family's furniture business, Nadel's Furniture, in Dover. She worked at Kent General Hospital, in Dover, and for Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury, Md. She then relocated to Denver, Colo., to be closer to her family. In Denver, Maura worked at the National Jewish Hospital and at Rose Medical Center, from which she retired. In spite of the many years Maura spent living in the United States, she only called Scotland "Home." She was very proud of her heritage, and loved to hear Scottish and Irish songs, and the sound of the bagpipes. Maura was a dedicated fan of the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies. She was also a Phillies fan, as long as they weren't playing the Rockies! She was a whiz at crosswords, loved to read, and was an avid Jeopardy fan. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1969; by her son, Edmund, in 1993; and by two brothers, John and William McEwan. She is survived by her sister, Margaret, of Glasgow, Scotland; by three daughters, Anne (Jim) of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Jeanette (Dan) of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Denise, with whom she resided in Denver, Colo. She is also survived by three sons, Joseph John of Middletown, Gerald (Debbie) of Smyrna, and Brian, of Traveler's Rest, S.C. Maura also leaves behind several nieces and nephews in Scotland and Ireland, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren to cherish her memory. Arrangements are being handled by Pippin Funeral Home, in Camden. Condolences may be sent to pippinfh@comcast.net. Services will be private, at the family's request.
