SMYRNA - Mary S. McDonald, 88, passed away peacefully at her home on March 24, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Czechoslovakia on Jan. 15, 1924, to the late Stephen and Elizabeth Sabanosh. She was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. John D. McDonald, US Navy Retired; and her brother, John Sabanosh. After retiring from the Navy in 1968, the McDonalds settled in Smyrna. Mary worked for the DE Division of Social Services for 15 years. She was a member of the Red Hatters, and was a long-time volunteer at the Dover Air Force Base USO. Mary was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother who was an avid reader and an award winning baker. Left to cherish her memory are her three children and spouses, Debbie and Kevin Williams of Odenton, Md., Marybeth and Dwight Hastings of Frankford, and John and Cindy McDonald of Virginia Beach, Va.; and her four grandchildren, Beth Moore, Lindsey Beauchamp, Ashley Williams, and Brittany Williams. Services will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 30, at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial will be 1 p.m., Friday, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care of Delaware, 220 Continental Dr., Ste. 101, Newark, DE 19713; or to the USO Delaware, 500 Purple Heart Way, Dover AFB, DE 19902.
