Mary Rebecca Houston

GREENWOOD - Mary Rebecca Houston was born on Jan. 13, 1925 at Owens Station, Del., the daughter of the late Philip William and Harriett Elizabeth Dolbow Houston. She died on May 22, 2012 at Milford Bayhealth Hospital after a brief illness. An alumnus of Greenwood High School, she was a talented artist, painting a mural of "Washington Crossing the Delaware" which hung in the school's foyer for many years. She sang soprano in the acappella choir and won blue ribbons in home economic sewing projects. Mary retired from the E. I. Dupont Seaford Nylon Plant after 39 years of service working as a components laboratory technician. Traveling extensively at home and abroad, Mary collected numerous Hummels, other figurines and literary groupings. She nurtured and exchanged roses, peonies, hydrangea and iris types with like-minded associates. Preceding her in death in addition to her parents, were brothers, Owens and Robert; sisters, Beulah Kulmack, Margaret Fooks and Elizabeth and Elsie Houston; surviving sisters are, Harriett Houston and Florence McKinney and her husband Fred; a close niece, Ellen Peterson, and numerous family members. Mary was christened at St. Johnstown UME church by Rev. Clough and baptized in the Jordan River in Israel by the Rev. William McDaniel of the Church of the Brethren of Farmington, DE. Interment will be on May 25, 2012 in St. Johnstown Cemetery.
