Mary Maloy Scott

SMYRNA - Born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 21, 1933. She was the oldest of five children born to Edward and Rose Maloy. She departed this life on December 1, 2017. She received her early education in Wilmington, moved to Smyrna at age 9, where she attended a two-room school house (grades 1-8) and later completed her elementary and middle school education at Booker T. Washington Elementary School (Dover). It was here where she met her husband, William Loper Scott. They had three children, Sheldon, Jeffrey and Rachel.
Mary graduated from Delaware State (College) University Laboratory High School. She attended Delaware State (College) University and graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in Biology. She went on to receive her Master of Arts degree in Psychology from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.
Her professional career experiences included a variety of positions in education (K-College). She began as a school secretary, on to science teacher, later an English teacher at the former William Henry Comprehensive High School in Dover. In 1965, she became the first minority educator to join the faculty of the Smyrna School District as an English teacher and moved up the ranks to Director of Education, Principal, Assistant Superintendent and retired as Superintendent of Schools in 1998.
First public viewing will be held Sunday, December 10, from 3-5 pm, at Evan W. Smith Funeral Services, 518 S. Bay Rd., Dover, DE. Service of Celebration will be held 11 am Monday, December 11, at Delaware State University, Education and Humanities Building, 1200 N Dupont Hwy, Dover, DE. Viewing is from 9-11 am with formal Homegoing Services to follow. Interment is in Sharon Hill Memorial Park.
