DOVER - Mary Louise Wilcutts passed away peacefully in her Dover home on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. She was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey on November 4, 1929 to George Carey and Rose Anold Haggerty. Soon after her birth Mary Lou moved to Little Creek, Delaware with her parents and the family expanded 18 months later with birth of her sister Jean. In 1948, Mary Lou graduated from Dover High School. Growing up in a small Delaware Bay Town had its challenges for Mary Lou and Jean. She didn't care for working at her Mother's General Store or going to school. In fact, her high school yearbook listed as her ambition "housewife" and that she "intends not to be a clerk in a store." But, she did enjoy reading thanks to her favorite high school English teacher Mrs. George Ehinger. Mary Lou married Edgar C. Cregar in 1948 and gave birth to her son Edgar "Eddie" Cregar, Jr. in 1952. She and Edgar divorced, and she married Roy Wilcutts in 1972. They were the perfect match. Roy tall and quite, and Mary Lou petite and always willing to share her thoughts…much to Roy's delight. They met while working for the Delaware Public Archives. Mary Lou and Roy enjoyed visiting with family and friends and hitting the yard sales together. Roy in search of the next great treasure to stash in the shed in the yard, and Mary Lou would load up on paperback books. Although Mary Lou worked at a couple of different State jobs and volunteered her time for various groups, she was most proud of her "work" as a Mom and homemaker. She loved to spoil her family and friends. Her home always had an extra kid staying overnight or enjoying a meal at the table. Dinner included enough food for three times the number of people in attendance, plus she would send them all home with a plate full of food, too. Her classic Delaware specialties included clam fritters, fried tomatoes and gravy, macaroni salad, ambrosia, beef vegetable soup, biscuits and yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Christmas always meant a big tub of home-made chocolate chip cookies. Mary Lou wasn't your typical small-town Delaware girl. Growing up in a family with strong Democratic political ties encouraged her to work hard on the Kennedy-Johnson presidential campaign, and she even received an invitation to the inauguration in Washington D.C. She enjoyed music by a variety of artists, but most enjoyed Ray Charles - country, jazz, gospel and blues. She shared her love of music and bought her son Eddie the first Beatles album as soon as it hit the shelves at B&B Music on Loockerman and Governors in downtown Dover. In recent years, she embraced technology to watch movies late into the night on her personal DVD player. After a brief illness, Roy passed away at home on August 22, 1996. She also lost her stepson Kenneth "Kenny" Wilcutts in 2007 and grand-dog Bandit in September 2011. Mary Lou is survived by her son Eddie Cregar and wife Heather of Dover; sister, Jean Lawson of Dover; stepson, Ronald "Ronnie" Wilcutts and wife Alicia of Orion, Michigan; aunt, Evelyn "Ebbie" McCool of Dover; sister-in-law, Clara Russell of Milford; dear friends from Dover, Shirley Johnson, Madeline Polanski, Hazel Elder, Harry and Marge Bader; and a large group of kind and caring friends at Luther Towers. A graveside service and burial will be held at Lakeside Cemetery on North State Street in Dover on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 28467 DuPont Boulevard, Suite 6, Millsboro, Delaware 19966. Arrangements by Trader Funeral Home Inc., Dover, Delaware.
