MILFORD - Mary Ellen Thomas Wix, a resident of Milford for over 25 years, passed away on Nov. 30, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Harrington, Del., Mary Ellen graduated from Harrington High School in 1951. She graduated from Delaware Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1954. She started and ended her nursing career in Milford, Del. She married the late William M. Wix in 1955. A devoted military wife and mother of three children, she was a member of the Officers Wives Club, served as a Girl Scout leader and homeroom booster mother, and taught sewing classes. She loved needlework and crafts, overseeing the cross stitching of the kneelers at the West Point Chapel. Her home was always known as the "Delaware Inn", as all were always welcome there. In 1987, Mary Ellen returned home to her beloved Delaware. She had diverse and multiple talents, touched many lives with her compassionate care during an outstanding nursing career, and was a small-business owner of several needlepoint and consignment shops. She was a member of the Harrington High School and Delaware Hospital Nursing Alumni Associations and national needlework guild. She especially enjoyed her numerous years working as a nurse at the Delaware State Fair First Aid Station. Throughout her life, Mary Ellen was blessed with devoted classmates and special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. William M. Wix (ret.); and her parents, William Earl and Hattie Stevenson Thomas. Mary Ellen is survived by three children, Cindy Wix Ingling and husband Rich of Henderson, Nev., Linda McGonagle and husband Steff, of Genoa, N.Y., and Tom Wix and wife Laura, of Alpharetta, Ga.; one sister, Jeanie Thomas DeLeo and husband Jim of Dover, Del.; two grandchildren, Leigh McGonagle of Falmouth, Mass. and Evan McGonagle, of Buffalo, N.Y.; three nieces and one nephew, Michelle Bowers and husband Jimmy, of Townsend, Del., Greg Smith and wife Debbie of Harrington, Del., Wendy LeBorgne and husband Ed and their two children of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Alison DeLeo of Washington, D.C.; and her loyal cat, Holly. Viewing was held on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home at 50 W. Commerce Street in Harrington, DE. Visitation was held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 beginning at 10 a.m. followed by a celebration of life service at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church at 200 Weiner Avenue in Harrington, DE.
