OKEECHOBEE - Long time Florida resident, Marvin L. Wilson, 89, passed away Monday, Aug. 29, 2011. Mr. Wilson was born in Hixon, Tenn., in 1922 and moved to Eagle Bay (Okeechobee) in 1924. After graduating from Okeechobee High School in 1941, "Dynamite" Wilson enlisted in the US Navy where he served as a Pharmacist Mate throughout the war. He saw fighting at Anzio, Italy, and his ship was sunk off the coast of Algeria in the Mediterranean. After the war Mr. Wilson was stationed at Foreman Field (Davie Florida) where he met and married the love of his life, Marie Oliveti. He joined the Florida Power and Light Company and worked there until retirement in 1986. Mr. Wilson will be remembered by generations of south Floridians first as Ready Kilowatt aka "Kite man" who visited south Florida schools from 1955 to 1962 dressed in his FP&L lineman gear lecturing students on the dangers of flying kites near telephone wires and downed wires in general. He will also be remembered as the friendly "crossing guard" at NW 46th Avenue (Plantation) where he conducted school children safely across the busy intersection from 1986 until 2007. Mr. Wilson was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge of Okeechobee and the Calvary Chapel congregation. He is survived by his children, Marvin Jr., Joseph, and Karen (Larsen) as well as seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A Viewing, Services and military honors will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens South in Davie, Fla., on today, Sept. 2, 2011, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The family requests that contributions be made to Compassion International (12200 Voyager Parkway, Colorado Springs, CO 80921), in lieu of flowers.
