Marion Catherine (Jones) Thompson was called home to be with the Lord on Oct. 14, 2018. A native Delawarean, Marion was born in Wilmington on Aug. 10, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Gilbert Randolph and Myrtle Elizabeth (Timmons) Jones. She retired from Scott Paper in Dover.
Marion was a beautiful, kind, loving woman who cherished her family. She displayed great strength throughout many life challenges, beginning at the tender age of ten when her mother passed away and she became the nurturer to her toddler brother, eventually having to quit school due to assuming responsibilities at home. Filled with grace and humility, she was never one to complain.
She enjoyed cooking and gardening, and was a talented seamstress who sewed, crocheted, knitted and embroidered many beautiful quilts, clothes and table scarves. Treasured doll clothes she made over 55 years ago have been passed down through generations and are still played with by a great granddaughter. Marion enjoyed baking and everyone's favorite was her homemade baked macaroni and cheese.
In addition to her parents, Marion was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard O. Via, of Dover; and brothers, Raymond Jones at birth and Robert James Jones of Colorado Springs, Colo.
She is survived by a brother, Gilbert Jones Jr. of Florida; and a sister, Dorothy Walling of New Castle. She is also survived by six children, Charles Small Jr. (Sherry), of Plant City, Fla., Diane Quig of Wilmington, Abbie Deletto (Vincent) of Newark, Rickey Small (Peggy) of Middletown, Cindy Nagle (Bill) of Lincoln, and Edith Heredia (Eddie) of Dover; and 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She will hold a special place forever in their hearts.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018 at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus Street, Dover, DE 19901, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by a celebration of Marion's life at 12 p.m. Burial will follow at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, 6486 Bay Road, Frederica, DE 19946.
