GREENWOOD - Mannon "Manny" N. Robinson Jr., of Greenwood, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, in State Street Assisted Living, Dover, after a long battle with cancer. He was 62.
He was born in Elkton, Md. to the late Mannon and Marie Robinson.
Manny developed a strong bond of friendship with his nurses and physicians at the Bayhealth Cancer Center, Hospice Nurses and staff at the State Street Assisted Living in Dover, and the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md.
Manny was a people person, loved life and loved people. He was known to make people smile and laugh, along with words of encouragement.
He was a friend to many and always had a warm smile and hug waiting for you. Manny never met at stranger. He will be surely missed.
Manny graduated from Harrington High School in 1963.
He became a horseman, owning, training and racing horses all over the country.
He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association and the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame of Goshen, N.Y.
Manny retired in June 2004 from Scott Paper in Dover where he was a mechanic, electrician and was a manufacturing contractor. After retiring he began working for Ace Hardware in Harrington,
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrington, serving as finance chairman.
Manny was a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge and the Harrington Lions Club.
Manny was given a surprise birthday party on Nov. 4, 2007, for his 62nd birthday at the Harrington Senior Center, where for the first time friends and family saw Manny speechless.
He was known to play jokes on people and the story is told when he met Hazel, his future wife, while traveling around the country with horse racing, Manny picked her up, threw her in a trash can and pushed her outside in the snow.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Hazel A. (Longe) Robinson of Greenwood; sons Chad T. Robinson of Greenwood and Joseph Lane of New Hampshire; daughter April M. Mahoney of Harrington; one grandchild Jeremy Mahoney; goddaughters Heather Williams and Beth Morrison; god granddaughter Noelle Morrison; sister Phyllis Kohel; and a special school friend who became a part of the family, Larry Sapp and his wife Leah "Snook."
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Asbury United Methodist Church.
The Revs. Martha Calloway and Kim Gilson will officiate.
A visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.
Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
