ROXANA — Tournament host Lower Sussex lowered the boom on Delaware foe Middletown Odessa Townsend early and often Monday night.
The District III champions finished with a 14-0 five-inning victory over the East Region champs in the all-Delaware opener of the Senior League Softball World Series.
Ryleigh Smith doubled home a run in the second inning and smacked a three-run home run, highlighting a five-run fourth, as the Sussex County squad took full command 11-0.
Meanwhile, the Lower Sussex pitching tandem of Cierra Lewis and Automn Wille kept the M.O.T. bats at bay.
Lewis, the winning pitcher, hurled one-hit ball over three innings, striking out seven, while Wille allowed just one hit and struck out four over the fourth and fifth innings.
The contest ended after five innings under the 10-run rule.
“I’m just super proud of each and every one of these girls,” said Lower Sussex manager Sarah Hoban. “It was an exciting game. I’m proud of both of our pitchers, to go out there and just deal the way they did. Our bats were on fire, and our base running. ... All around, I couldn’t be prouder.”
Ally Taylor and Myranda Talmadge accounted for the two hits for M.O.T, which won the East Region title last Wednesday.
Lower Sussex jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning. Leadoff batter Sophie Scurci drew a walk, stole second and scored on a double by Parker O’Shields, who later scored on an error.
Walks to Katelyn Murray and Scurci, Gracie Hoban’s single, Smith’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly off the bat of O’Shields fueled a four-run second inning as Lower Sussex jumped on top 6-0.
Lower Sussex added its final three runs in the fifth. Jazz Mayfield was hit by a pitch, O’Shields singled for her third hit, and Mariah McCabe stroked a two-run double before Wille ripped an RBI triple.
Sam Holliday and Tamiyah McCabe contributed to the Lower Sussex hit parade.
Both Delaware teams are in the five-team Pool A and play their second games Tuesday evening.
M.O.T. faces the Asia-Pacific Region champ from the Philippines, while Lower Sussex plays U.S. Southwest Region champ Louisiana. Both games are at 8 p.m.
The 10-team tournament, which features six U.S. teams and four international qualifiers, runs all week, culminating with the championship game Sunday evening.
Pool A includes Lower Sussex, M.O.T., U.S.Southwest, Asia Pacific and Latin America. Pool B teams are U.S. Central, U.S. Southeast, U.S. West, Canada and Europe-Africa. The top four teams in each pool advance to Friday’s quarterfinals..
Lower Sussex earned the automatic Delaware District III host berth by defeating Upper Sussex in a best-of-three series on July 22.
Lower Sussex and its manager are no strangers to the World Series in Roxana.
“I have been very fortunate,” said Hoban. “This is actually Lower Sussex’s third year qualifying to come here. So, this is my third time. I’m hoping the third time is a charm.
“We’re taking this one game at a time. I’ve got a great group of girls. I’m super excited for them.”
U.S. Southeast Region champ South Carolina defeated Canada 8-5 in Monday’s other opener. Two other openers had 8 p.m. starts.
All games are to be televised on ESPN+.
