CLAYTON - Lawrence L. Smith Jr. of Clayton passed away Monday, June 18, 2007, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 83.
Born in Wilmington, Mr. Smith was the son of Edna (Lane) Romano of Wilmington and the late Lawrence L. Smith Sr.
He worked as an inspector for Electric Hose and Rubber for 29 years. He also worked as an inspector for 10 years at Briggs Corp., and as security guard for Gettier. His favorite job was working security for Superior Court in Dover.
A charitable man, Mr. Smith was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and drove elderly to their doctors" appointments.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Leanore; and stepfather, John Romano.
In addition to his 102 year old mother, Mr. Smith will be missed by his daughters, Leanore M. Taylor of New Castle, Beverly Scullion of Newport, Edna Smith of Elkton, Kathleen Norcross of Texas, and Peggy Aguilar of Texas; his sons, Lawrence L. III of Tennessee and Robert J. of Newport; 24 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; his sisters, Joan Bailey, Edna Kreijek and Eileen Siemone; and his brothers, Robert Romano and John Romano.
Friends and family are invited to visitation on Sunday evening between 6 and 8 at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Wilmington, where funeral services will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Monday. Interment will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in loving memory of his wife of 66 years, Leanore Smith, to the Alzheimer"s Association, 2806 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 198805.
