Lawrence E. Chaffinch Sr., 81

WILMINGTON - Lawrence E. Chaffinch Sr. of Wilmington passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, in Wilmington Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 81.

Mr. Chaffinch was born in Marcus Hook and raised in Bridgeville. In 1952, he moved to Wilmington where he had since resided.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II.

Mr. Chaffinch was employed by the Sun Oil Co. for 41 years in many different positions, retiring in 1984 as shipping manager.

He was an active member of the Free Mason Lodge 33, Wilmington. He was a member of the Nur Temple Shriners of Wilmington and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

His hobbies included collecting pocket watches, belt buckles and coins.

Mr. Chaffinch enjoyed traveling and visiting family in Tennessee, Florida and Virginia Beach, and vacationing in the Caribbean and Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Myrtle (Faulkner) Chaffinch; and a sister, Irene Chaffinch, in November 2006.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Wanda (Lanning) Chaffinch; three sons, Lawrence E. Chaffinch Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Gerald W. Chaffinch of Columbia, Md., and David R. Chaffinch of Wilmington; a stepson, Carl E. Bowman Jr. of Chadds Ford, Pa.; two daughters, Joyce Molitor of Clayton and Donna Moran of Wilmington; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Wheatley of Pennsville, N.J.; 20 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and again from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday in Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 5980 Chichester Avenue, Pennsylvania.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
