DOVER - Joseph Waples Hastings of Dover died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his loving friends. He was 68.
Born March 10, 1939, in the Stockley Center, Georgetown, he was the son of the late Grace Hastings Phillips and Carlton Phillips.
Mr. Hastings was especially fond of his middle name because it was the name of the doctor who delivered him.
He spent most of his formative years with his grandmother, Mrs. Watson whom he truly adored.
Mr. Hastings loved living on her farm and enjoyed horseback riding.
He was employed by the Chimes at Dover Air Force Base and retired in March 2007.
Mr. Hastings was a member of the Aktion Club of Dover, where he held the position of treasurer.
He also attended Wesley United Methodist Church and was a member of the Modern Maturity Center.
Mr. Hastings enjoyed bowling, singing, playing his guitar and socializing with his friends at Goose Creek.
He was also an avid collector of model ships.
'Joe,' as he was affectionately called by his friends, was a kind and compassionate man.
He always tried to look out for his friends, lending a helping hand when he could.
Mr. Hastings will be missed by all who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memories by his close friends whom he considered his family, Kathy, Isaac, Charles, Sherman, Joann and Terry, Deborah, Betty, Donna, Donal, Mae, Luci, Biancca, Amanda, Louise, Florence, Kathleen, Roper, Brian, Margaret, Milton, Jennifer; his cousin, Leroy Wienberg; the staff of Goose Creek Convenience Store; and a host of other friends too numerous to mention.
Service of remembrance will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Highway, Harrington, where friends may call one hour prior.
Interment will be in Stockley Cemetery, Gerogetown.
