Joseph J. Whitmore, 86

EARLEVILLE, Md. - Joseph J. Whitmore, of Earleville, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, in Perry Point (Md.) VA Medical Center. He was 86.

Mr. Whitmore was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Philadelphia, son of the late Beatrice Whitmore.

He was a World War II U.S. Marine, serving from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater.

In 1950, he served as corporal with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Whitmore was employed as a freight conductor with Conrail for 45 years, retiring in 1980.

He lived in Drexel Hill, Pa., and enjoyed summers in Earleville since 1953, making it home in 1986.

Mr. Whitmore was a member of St. Dennis Roman Catholic Church in Galena, the Lower Cecil County Senior Citizens and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Glenolden, Pa., and Millington.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Magera Whitmore; six sons, Michael Whitmore of Cumming, Ga., Thomas Whitmore of West Chester, Pa., Steven Whitmore of Aston, Pa., Patrick Whitmore and Mark Whitmore, both of Earleville, and David Whitmore of Norwood, Pa.; a loving daughter, Lisa Whitmore of Drexel Hill; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Dennis Roman Catholic Church, 153 N. Main St., Galena, where friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m.

Burial will be private.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be offered to the Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.
